State of the Evidence in Religions & Development Report

Growth of a field

This large state of evidence document includes an explicit section on faith-sensitive psychosocial support which it suggest has emerged as a distinct interest over the last 5 years or so. The report highlights a growth in guidance documents, online learning, systematic and literature review and original research on this topic.

Spirituality

While there is evidently a growing awareness of the impact of faith and spirituality on coping and resilience, including for aid workers, existing psychosocial support rarely engaged with spirituality.

Parallel activities

The pastoral and spiritual support from faith actors and communities therefore runs in parallel without integration.

Comment:

This report situates faith-sensitive MHPSS in the wider field of religion and development/humanitarianism and provides a useful recent summary of the faith sensitive MHPSS evidence.
